A final pano - The Iconic Burj - #211

And here we are, tourist central, though it's an sight I guess that I never grow tired of...

The Burj taken from the Madinat and the final pano in our little series...

From tomorrow I guess it'll all be about the fillies and the punters, fresh from the world's richest horse race - The Dubai World Cup

Another Wadi Pano - #210

I know that the exposure is blown in the left of this one, however I do like the wide expanse in this pano.

Yesterday's Creek pano has triggered a mini-pano fest...

Here is a not so perfect pano of a forbidden view :)

Bus Stop - #207

It looks reasonably pleasant and peaceful on this Friday morning...

... however when there are lots of people all jostling in 45 degree C heat then this form of public transport is not the best option - but it may be the only option available for many for a while. Especially with a metro a few years away and road tolls starting this year... hey ho...

Good times... an older shot, but one worth showing.

The Irish Village - #205

One of Dubai's famous locations... The Irish Village & Dubai Tennis Stadium.

Every city in the world, except maybe Riyadh, has an Irish themed pub. Dubai is no different, except being Dubai it's an Irish Village. Through the cooler months it's a great place to have some food a drop of the black stuff etc on its wide outdoor area. Bands play here too, most recently Bob Geldof before that The Pretenders (nb. bands for the 21st Century need not apply!!)

Through the summer it's a bit smoke filled and not so good... if you are reading this IV - take note.

One of the better pubs in town...

On The Browns - #204

At Hatta we played a short round of nine hole golf. Desert style...

The Greens were called Browns and the fairways were rock strewen, thorn bush infested dusty trails. You carry around a small square of astro turf on to which you place your ball before taking the shot.

A weird variation on the classic game of golf.

Tree, Sky, Rock - #203

Just back from a very pleasant trip to Hatta Fort Hotel, which is about 1 hour from Dubai city although it is still in the Emirate of Dubai. On route you see a lot of these desert scrubb / thorn trees.

It reminded me to post this shot - I like the starkness of the tree and rocky environment it thrives in.

So Is This Dubai? - #200

A US$10million wood panel motor cruiser delicately bearthed in a US10$billion project.

Post 200 - though technical porblems are making posting difficult over the last week or so... hope to resolve these and get on track again... thanks to all my visitors...

Welcome To Dubai - #196

This is the first sight you will see when you land at Dubai (DXB) airport.

It gets especially crowded around midnight when a lot of the planes arrive. At this time of year it is not so bad, but land at midnight in mid-August for the first time and you'll be overwhelmed with the oven like temperatures and braying crowds...

Marhaba habibi!

1545 - #193

I liked this view in the port area of the fishing village.

I'm not sure of the purpose for these blocks. Too small to be fenders or the like. Maybe markers for the fishing pots...

The Three Fishermen Of Jumeirah - #192

Switching back to the fish topic... here are three of the guys I met at the fishing village.

Happily working on their nets on a peaceful morning.

They were more than happy for me to take a few shots. Jez's comment of a few post's ago about there being not enough "happy" portraits struck a chord with me. Hopefully this readdresses the balance a little.

Let There Be Rawk a/k/a The Kids In Space Program - #190

As mentioned yesterday - the thems for this week will mostly be fish and rock.

Or even RAWK! Yesterday was day one of Dubai's Desert Rock Festival. It's really come on a lot in its four years. The line up is really impressive with Iron Maiden, Robert Plant and The Prodigy amoung the line up.

Last night The Prodigy reminded everyone of just how amazing they are live.

Great day out.

Catch Of The Day - #189

A fresh, glistening, salty, beautiful catch for a Friday morning.

Big thanks to Sam for giving me the location details. It is a fishing village that is incongruously located in the middle of Dubai. Have a look at Sam's very cool experiment at this location. The Film Experience

It's a great place, very interesting, yet it is a very poor living from the sea these days. The people here do seem to be full of humour and happiness though which is really good to see...

The themes for this week will mostly be fish and rock... all will become clear...

This Is Normal - a/k/a SZR Road Kill - #186

Following on from my comment a couple of days ago about photographers looking in certain ways and their unusual behaviour - here is an example of getting in certain positions / situations.

Yes, I did think that in the middle of the day it was acceptable and normal to get underneath a parked car to take a picture of some people that I don't know and never will know with one result being that it is posted on the internet for people to see.

This is normal.

A DXB Comedy Exit - #185

This scene reminded me of a UK comedy series from the past - Morecambe & Wise.

I fear this post dates me too much.

Forever 21 - #184

A view of SRZ - the 2 gentlemen on the building are the founders of the nation. The lady in the advert, as far as I know, played no role in the foundation of the nation.

Look Up Once In A While - #182

Photography makes you look at the world differently I think. You tend to look at things from odd angles and behave strangely in public...

There is usually no need to look up...

Men At Work Plus A Mile Stone - Theme Day - #181

For the monthly theme day I was torn between art and commerce.

I saw commerce immediately, what with the much publicised Dubai worker conditions, Dubai's economic growth and construction of some of the most ambitious and odd projects in the world as as being an obvious topic.

However I had to shun the darkside and look to the light...

With some difficulty I had to choose art over commerce as I felt it was the right thing to do. By the way - I'm not calling my shots art, they are images of the process of making art. A process I am grateful to be associated with. These are from the film set I came across at the weekend. These are the men at work I choose to celebrate on this theme day.

For those interested, here are the clapper board details for posterity...

And on a small personal note - both Dubai Daily Photo and my DP twin's Shanghai Daily Photo are six months old today!

A massive 62 Daily Photo sites are participating in the 1st March theme, "Men at work", please use the links to below to visit them.

Due to time zone differences and other factors, the theme photo may not be displayed until later if you are viewing early in the day.
