Golf Sail - #317

This is the Dubai Creek Golf Club - a pretty recognisable landmark in Dubai. A little reminiscent of the Sydney Opera in a way. They sail effect is quite common in Dubai - is it elsewhere too?

Floating Bridges - #302

Dubai is suddenly becoming a city of bridges, expanding from 2 to 4 in a few months, with another one coming up fast...

This is the floating bridge, opening soon - it looks "interesting"!

The Mouth Of The Creek - #285

A vital part of Dubai's history and earlt success is the Creek. The original wooden dwellings lined the Creek and the main economy was based on trade and pearl fishing.

This was only to change signifiantly in the 1950s with the discovery of oil in the region. The population of Dubai then was 20,000. Today it is well over 1 million.

A Glowing Pregnant Lady - # 254

This glowing pregnant lady is actually the National Bank Of Dubai building on the banks of the Creek. People have given this building the affectionate nickname of the "Pregnant Lady" due to the shape of the bulging glass facade.

(Bluey has escaped Dubai for a few days, all posts as usual courtesy of the wonderful Chuckeroon at Richmond-Upon-Thames please go check his daily photoblog out!)

The Pregnant Lady - #177

Three well known Dubai buildings on the bank of the Creek. The one in the middle is nicknamed The Pregnant Lady as it has a bank of glass windows with a gentle verticla bulging curve to it, which gives it the appearance of a pregnant lady.

Taken Friday morning, a stunning day - great temperature, nice skies, at this time of year Dubai is very nice.

Very, Very Frightening - #137

As part of Dubai Shopping Festival there are fireworks every night at 8:30pm over the Creek.

Along with Edwin I guess it's a firework's kind of week...

Two Thousand Yard Stare - #134

I keep seeing people in Dubai with a thousand yard stare going on.

A definition of the phrase "Thousand Yard Stare" : Corporal Joe Houle said he saw no emotion in the eyes of his new squad: "The look in their eyes was like the life was sucked out of them."

See also: In the movie Full Metal Jacket, there is an exchange between Marines Payback and greenhorn Stars and Stripes photographer Rafterman, on the eve of the Tet offensive where Payback explains about the thousand-yard stare that "a grunt gets it when he's been in the shit too long" and that "it's like you're really seeing beyond."

Meet The Neighbours - #121

Iran is approx 150 kms away from Dubai.

The UAE and Iran have been disputing several islands in the Gulf for decades, US and the UN are getting heavy on Iran for their supposed nuclear ambitions...

Iran is heading towards becoming the latest public enemy number 1.

These guys I met today, the nicest guys I met all day. Most genuine, friendliest, coolest guys. And yes, they are Iranian. People are people.

Gone Fishin' -#98

A pretty pleasant way to spend a day I'd think...

... however if I went fishing I'd be quite keen to eat my catch (sorry!) but these guys are fishing in the Creek and I would not advocate eating anything from there...

Through the square window - #72

A view of Dubai Creek from a window in Sheikh Maktoum's house.

This is a preserved building dating back to the turn of the last century and houses the most amazing collection of Dubai photographs.

The photos from the 1940s through to the late 1960s are stunning and give a great insight into the just mind boggling pace of development...

If you visit, I recommend a trip here.

What's Blue, Yellow and Linear? - #38

I think the colours give this away... This is the Arabic version of a famous logo - can you guess the brand?

I'm quite interested with the process from taking a logo with English wording and then translating this into non English characters such as Arabic, Cantonese, Cyrillic, Japanese etc. It's not just translation, but also graphical translation.

The shot was taken today in Dubai Festival City - a very interesting new area springing up next to the Creek. There will be rented accommodation for approx 10,000 people, 40 restaurants, 4 5 star hotels, a golf course and a marina as well as a huge amount of shops. It is the biggest real estate project in the world that is owned by one man, Mr Al Futtaim.

It looks a nice place to live...

Creek Bird and Dubai looking quite fine - #7

Dubai can be a really pleasant place during the cooler months, Oct through to April / May approx are great. The city has a large amount of lush green parks, public beaches and beach parks and just out side of the city there are beautiful beaches such as Jebel Ali.

This shot is taken at another really nice area of Dubai - The Creek - this is a sea inlet that runs through the centre of old town Dubai. The waterway is traditionally import and caries a lot of sea traffic in the form of dhows and local very cheap water taxis called abras.

This shot was taken from a nice waterfront restaurant called The Boardwalk just as the sun was setting on a Friday (Friday & Saturday are the weekend in Dubai not Sat / Sun).

Lastly - credit where it is due - this shot was actually taken by my good wife, however it is such a great shot I had to include it!
