Giftland - #122

A street scene in Deira. I like the guy checking himself out in the centre...

Also a small homage to San Francisco Daily Photo I only wish I had a wide angle lense and a DSLR to even get close to what Manuel does.

P.S. Jan 1st post will be a little later than usual, it will be about 1pm UAE time, I'm camping and wifi don't do the beach...

Meet The Neighbours - #121

Iran is approx 150 kms away from Dubai.

The UAE and Iran have been disputing several islands in the Gulf for decades, US and the UN are getting heavy on Iran for their supposed nuclear ambitions...

Iran is heading towards becoming the latest public enemy number 1.

These guys I met today, the nicest guys I met all day. Most genuine, friendliest, coolest guys. And yes, they are Iranian. People are people.

The View From Above - #120

A tale of 1 plant, 1 family,2 people and a loner waste bin. In a mall. Taken from a third party perspective.

Camel Guy No. 3 - #119

A cool jockey. We had a brief but good shouted conversation as he went past...

All the jockeys / handlers seem like decent guys who are happy to tolerate us staring at them and asking stupid questions.

P.S. For some reason there are weird internet issues going on in the UAE right now, hopefully temporary, although if there are no posts in the coming days it'll be down to connectivity problems. I hope this is not the case though...

Bluey In A Bauble - #118

Not to be left out - joining in the reflection photos... Bluey in a giant bauble, about 30cm across. Even the small things are big in Dubai.

Found in The One a Danish furniture store in Dubai.

Please check out more reflections at Greenville Daily Photo courtesy of the splendid Denton.

Sezzam Reflection - #117

Some things I like:

Food, photography, people and reflections

I like the way they come together in this shot. Taken at a nice place to have a quick lunch, Sezzam at Mall Of The Emirates - which looks on to the ski slope.

I recommend either the hammour tandoori (hammour is a cod like fish) or the thai papaya salad...

P.S. Thanks for the nice Xmas wishes - I do hope you all had a great time too.

A Bluey Xmas - #116

Happy Xmas to you all!

I wish you all peace and happiness. I don't care what religon you follow, if any, but I do care that you are safe, happy and well.

Do you know why I'm Bluey? Because Bluey could be from anywhere.

From one Bluey to another... live well, be happy, give love.

I could win what? - #115

Why is there a plane in the mall?

Yes, the first 700 people to sign up for for a new property development will be entered in to a draw. The winner will receive their own jet plane.

The losers, and indeed everyone else that buys an apartment, will receive a new Jaguar car.

In the mall, for Dubai Shopping Festival (an interesting concept...) for everyone that spends US$100 they will be entered into a competition with the top prize as a half million dollar apartment.

For a country that has banned gambling, there sure are some big prizes out there...

Some peace and tranquility, Arabic style.

Me likey, hope you do too.

The Most Dangerous Place In Dubai - #113

The roads and construction saftey in Dubai is well documented and is found to be of a shocking standard.

With this in mind I dread to think what could possibly warrant so many warning signs... maybe beyond here it is the end of the world.

Jaleel Wishes You A Merry Xmas - #112

Jaleel Khan - Check out operator - Spinneys Supermarket.

How about leaving a festive message for Jaleel and I'll try to pass them to him?

Dubai Dec 2006.

P.S. One thought - I think this picture may say more about Dubai than a picture of, say, the Burj Al Arab...

Camel Guy No.2 - #111

If I've told you once... don't make me come over there and tell you again...

TM-166 - #110

Dubai has over 18% of the entire supply of cranes for the world.

And only 0.0001% of the available clouds.

Blurry Film Festival - #109

Well... Dubai Film Festival is now over. Many stars were in town including Richard Gere, Lawrence Fishbourne and Joshua Jackson.

Also, one of cinema's most successful mavericks - Oliver Stone. He gave a great Q&A after a screening of World Trade Center.

The above shot was taken in a little Bluey stylee - i.e. not really allowed. Sorry for the blur...

As I had promised some photos earlier in the week, I thought I'd make up for this by breaking all the rules with extra shots...

This (blurry) TV lady decided to interview Bluey about his thoughts on "Hollywoodland" (obviously not Bluey in this shot!). A very good movie, if you liked LA Confidential or Chinatown, this is a fine ('though not brilliant) film noir styled piece...

...and a Hummer to advertise the festival. Ahhhh how Dubai baby!

Edibile Gold Flake - #108

I'm sure this exists around the globe, however there is something inherently Dubai about the concept of edible gold flakes...

Should anyone wish to buy a pack, these are on sale in the deli at the Grand Hyatt for 80 dirhams (approx US$22).

I live on the second floor...

Welcome to my left hand domain.

Cactii- #106

It still amazes me that cactus can grow happily out in the open... it really shouldn't due to my location in a desert, but it does still surprise me.

Once Forbidden. Now Daily. - #105

This ad says too much for my small Bluey brain.

I post a daily photo of Dubai on the internet.
My daily photo twin is Jing, who also posts a photo a day.
Jing is from Shanghai, China.
China and Dubai (UAE) have both tried to make some sites forbidden.
Even simple sites like photo sites.

Once forbidden. Now daily?

This ad reminds me to post once a day, to remind me that all freedoms are a great luxury to be celebrated.

And in this spirit I celebrate all of you and hope you are free to do as you wish and, I hope, be happy as you do it. Simple really.

The Loneliness Of The Long Distance Worker - #104

Some workers here have been here for years, in fact decades, and only see their families once at the very most per year.

That must be tough in so many ways.

Spot The Bluey... - #103

Taken on a fine sunny day, unlike today which is pouring with rain. It rains really hard about once or twice a year usually, this year seems more... This is one of those moments and the whole town is flooded (again).

Instead here is a nice shot of a friend in the sunshine with a little Bluey self-portrait too.

Dubai International Film Festival - #102

The Dubai International Film Festival starts today

A good range of movies showing including Bobby, Hollywoodland, Babel and many more. Also playing this week is the amazing new Mel Gibson movie Apocalypto (I've seen it and it is really stunning...).

Bluey will really endeavour to snap some of the events before the week is out.

For now, the nearest Bluey can get is a 60 ft high billbord on the SZR advertising a TV station... :)

I Can See For Miles and Smiles #101

A happy guy in the desert. Maybe he was happy that his male bearded friend the kundura wearing person of restricted height, approx 4 foot, had just kissed my very tall male friend... but that is another story...

Who knows?

Sniff, sniff... what's that smell? - #100

... that's the smell of 100 photos in 100 days!

This shot was taken today at BIg Red Dunes in Dubai, with my wife and our visiting good friends Stella and Keith. A cool day!

It's been a fun 100 days. I hope to bring many more photos over the next 100 days and more.

Thanks to all for dropping by!

Congrats to my Daily Photo Twin" Jing in Shanghai - who also celebrates 100 posts today!

Bluey, shaken not stirred and most assuredly - at your service.

Gone Fishin' -#98

A pretty pleasant way to spend a day I'd think...

... however if I went fishing I'd be quite keen to eat my catch (sorry!) but these guys are fishing in the Creek and I would not advocate eating anything from there...

If Mini Porcelain Cows Could Fly - #97

... then they might look as cute as this beauty.

Spotted at the Dubai Ideal Home Show.

As was Ainsley Harriot... if ever there was someone who could make Bluey go a bit postal then that is the man. Grrrrrr.....

Rule No. 1 - #96

Rule No. 1 - Do Not Destroy.

Glass House Glass - #95

A very decent dining option - The Glasshouse @ Hilton Dubai Creek. Particularly good salad with black pudding and poached egg...

It is over shadowed a little with its neighbour Verre, which is Scottish chef Gordon Ramsay's Dubai restaurant. I was invited to dine there tonight and it was actually Gordon Ramsay that was overseeing the kitchen. I love food, but alas, the invitation did not include paying for me and as, allegedly, Dubai's best restaurant, with, allegedly, one of the world's best chefs in residence... it was a little pricy - so Bluey unfortunately had to decline graciously...

What's the best restaurant in your city?

(Should you care at all, in Dubai my 5 favourite places to eat currently are:

1) Barbeque at Jebel Ali beach including prawns, tuna steak & koftah
2) Coconut Grove - Sri Lankan / Kerala / Goan cuisine @ Rydges Plaza
3) Manhattan Grill - The Wagyu Beef Tenderloin @ Grand Hyatt
4) Al Safadi - Lebanese home delivery
5) Andiamo! - Friday brunch Italian style, fine wine and antipasti)

Anyways, I digress.

Bluey!

PS Michael - This is number 3 bar / restaurant at least - I expect you to keep a note :)

History Rising - #94

Here is the Burj Dubai. Burj means tower in arabic. This will be the tallest building in the world when it is finished.

It is currently about 88 floors high. As far as I know it will go to double this...

This was taken yesterday, before the rain started... Dubai is flooded right now...! It happens about once or twice a year.

A Bob Too Far? - #93

I couldn't decide on which one to use... so here is another "Bob" shot.

I'm sorry, but I feel a little part of me has become infected with Bob.

Tomorrow, I can confirm, will be Bob-free.

Bluey's Homage To Bob - #92

Each month several City Daily Photo blogs take part in a theme. This month has proved to be a challenge for myself, perhaps others too...

It's a little abstract / subjective. The idea is to take a photo like one of the best DPers so far, Bob from Barcelona. In this kind of style.

I was not sure at all which way to go with this...

Anyways, here is Bluey's Homage To Bob.

Taken in the beautiful Jumeriah Mosque, Nov 2006. Dubai UAE.

By the way - I would LOVE to know what Bob thought of our homage.

46 Daily Photo sites are participating in the 1st December theme, "A Photograph from the Waist Down" aka "A Homage To Bob", please use the links to below to visit them.

Due to time zone differences and other factors, the theme photo may not be displayed until later if you are viewing early in the day.
